Creating My Draft Contents Page

This is my first draft for my contents page, it shows where I will put my image and information. It also includes where the title will be.

I have added the background colours fitting in with my theme on the front page and Christmas.

I have now added the image, this took me awhile because InDesign is a difficuilt software to use and whenever I shrunk my image it cropped the image as well, however once looking online on how to shrink my image I learnt how to move it to the place I wanted and the size I wanted.

Now I have added the contents page informtaion, I got this information from looking at my questionnaire anaylsis. With this information I have added the page that it would be on.

This is my final draft of the contents page, I re-read the pages I orignally put on and chagned them because i missed out pages and didn't include the double page spreads. However i didn't include pages 1 and 2 because page 1 is the front cover and page 2 is the contents page. I have also added a Christmas image that fits it with the theme and the front page.

Creating My School Magazine Draft

This is my first draft off my school magazine. I had a few difficulties when first started creating my magazine; they were, inserting an image from google and change the text colour. However after researching online how to use Adobe InDesign, I now know how to use it.

I choose this colour scheme because it complements Christmas well, 'Red' and 'Green' are associated with Christmas. Whilst choosing this font I put into consideration that it needed to be bold to grab the readers attention, 'Myraid Pro'.

This is my second draft off my school magazine. I have added where I will insert my main image and main article. Although I found that I had some extra space near the bottom of the front page, so I will either add more images or an extra article, because I have not decided yet what to put there and I do not want it to be blank. I have also added '25th October, 2012' underneath the bar code, because this will be when the magazine would be released.

Whilst designing my magazine front cover I have took into consideration the 'Rule off the eye'. I'm doing this to attract the readers attention and make them want to buy the magazine, so when they look at the price they dont mind spending that much because they want to read it.

I have added background colours, to give the magazine more life and excitment. However I am not happy with it because, in my orignal draft it looked like the santa hat was being worn by the title, which I liked because it gave it an extra edge. The reason I cannot get the hat to overlap the title is because I got this image from google, which mieans it has an white background. I have tried on photoshop and paint to edit out the white background, but I have had no luck. Also i have move the main image and article around, because after taking and editing my image I have noticed that it would be more noticable and look more formated if I put it on the other side.

I have now added my front cover image, this took me awhile because the editing syste on InDesign is complex, I struggled to shrink the image to the size I needed without cropping the image. I moved the front cover image to the other side of the page because on the left of the images theres more off a gap, where the background of the quad is and the would look better next to all writing. I haven't positioned the writing or price yet, but I have added them in the same fon and design as the 'Christmas Issue'.

This is my final design for my school magazine. I have positionted all the text and added extra text to fill in the gaps. I have kept all the font the same style and colour, excluding the title. I don't like the fact that at the top is is white unlike the rest of my magazine, also I don't like that the zip code background is white as well. Although I like how I have added the Christmas theme into my magazine.

Contents Page Analysis

Analysis Of Contents Page

This contents page was designed for a college, you can tell this because the two student on the front are in their own casual clothes, not business wear like a post sixteen school. Also the students are posing as if they were in a fashion magazine, not a very appealing picture for a college. This contents page hasn’t been designed very well, the editing of the background students was done badly, and its difficult to understand the words. This person choose a difficult/messy font for a school magazine. There's no colour scheme, the word 'Contents' has been put over top off the title,  i presume, but because they've used the wrong font, and placed it over top, it's hard to read what the actual word is. They have put everything in capitals, and underneath the 'page content' it looks messy, and its difficult to understand.

This contents page was designed for Oratory School for boys, one of the first Catholic schools. This contents page has been designed well, it shows the head teacher in front, with some of the students behind him, they are standing with their hands in their pockets. They are all dressed in smart attire, which shows a well structured school. The font and layout is easily readable, and they've kept to minimal amount of colours, which is well designed to make it easily readable.

Analysis off Questionnaire Results

Question 1

Question 2

Question 3

Question 4

Question 5

Question 6

I asked an open ended question, 'What would you expect to find on the front cover?'. I got varouis answers for this question, such as Headlines, Pictures, Celebs, Pictures of Beaverwood students, Main Stories and Kilts. The most common answers out off the answers were various pictures and headlines.

Question 7

I asked 'Any Other Comments', for this question I got no answers, so I pressume that my target audience are happy with the magazine that I will be designing.

Summary

Now that my Questionnaire has been filled out by my target audience I know now what they expect to see on my magazine, or would prefer to see. The title will be called 'Beaverwood News' and it will be christmas themed. They will be willing to pay 30p overall, they want the magazine to be realised monthly. Throughout the magazine the most common subject of topics they would like to see are Horoscopes, School Gossip, Changes in School, GCSE Choices and Homework Tips. Homework Tips waqs the least favourite and only got one vote, so I wont include this in my magazine, to please my audience.

Location Picture's for School Magazine

The Five Pictures I Think Would Work Best

Front Of The School
I think this picture would be a good idea for the front cover of my version of the school magazine because it shows the architectural of the school showing its history and age. It also shows the blue front doors and the blue sign with the Beaverwood logo on it, the blue is also the colour of the school uniform. You could have a student either standing in front of the door holding a text book or a form of school work, or the student could be in between the two plants in front of the stairs.

Sixth Form Building Entrance
This picture would also be good for a front cover for my version of a school magazine, if I was doing a school magazine on Sixth Former's. This would work because it shows the entrance to the building, with the Beaverwood logo symbol on the blue sign. If i used this location I would place the Sixth Former student either on the stairs or in front of the stairs.

Quad 1st Floor
This picture would be good for either a Sixth Former or normal student magazine. This picture would be good because it shows the old school building in the background, it also shows the tree in the middle of the quad. The tree represents the age of the school, because it is a large tree it shows that its been there for years. If i used this as a front cover images i would place the student sat underneath the tree reading or doing work.

The Quad, Balcony View
This picture was taken on the balcony that is connected to the staff room, it gives a great view of the quad. This picture shows off the shape and design of the main building. It also shows the tree in the background, which gives a nice relaxing effect to the picture. If i was to use this location i would place the student on the balcony in front of the camera and this scene, so i could still get a mid-range shot of that student.

The Quad Arches
I'd like this picture for the front cover because it shows the history of the main building, with its old architectural detail's and it also shows a part of the tree. This picture captures the schools age, and it's learning area at the same time. If I was to use this image i would either place the student underneath the arches doing work, or in front of the camera to capture the mid-shot image of that student.

What I learnt Today, 11th September

Today I learnt how to consider the theme and location of the school magazine I will be producing. I learnt that if I wanted to do a theme for my school magazine i could consider Halloween, Christmas, New Years Eve, etc. If I chose to do one of those themes I would colour coordinate my theme into my magazine, for example if I did Halloween I would use orange and black as the main colours.
For the front cover image it will need to include a student (sixth former or normal), a mid-range shot of that student. It will also need to show the school, either the front of the sixth form block, if I was doing the magazine about Post 16, or in front of the school, the hallway, the quad, etc. The student she be dressed in the correct uniform representing the school or sixth form, and should also look like their interacting with a text book, or something intellectual. For the front cover we walked around the school and checked for different locations that would be good for the front cover, which represents the school well.
